JHU Orientation

Parent FAQ

The Tentative 2008 Parents Schedule is now available online. Note that information in the schedule is subject to change.

What programs are available on campus for us during Orientation?

During Orientation, we offer a number of programs specifically for incoming students' parents. When you first arrive to campus, you will receive a Parents' Folder, which includes information such as campus maps, directions to area shopping centers, local restaurant listings, and other area services. We will also have a Parent Reception to welcome you to campus when you first arrive. As far as programming goes, we offer information sessions on topics such as campus security and student life, social events such as Arts Night at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and a Parents' Assembly, where you will have the opportunity to hear from the president of the University as well as other campus administrators. We have a Siblings Program, so if you have younger children, feel free to bring them along with you.

Where should we stay during Orientation?

There are many hotels located very close to campus. A listing of these hotels can be found on our website in the "Hotel Information" section. A list of hotels will also be included in the first Orientation mailing, to be sent out at the end of June. We have blocked of a number of rooms at certain hotels, and many of these hotels offer special rates for Hopkins parents. Be sure to book your stay early to ensure that these rates will apply!

How long should we plan to stay?

Programs for parents begin with move-in and extend until midday on Sunday, August 31. You should plan to arrive either the day your son/daughter moves in or the night before. We will offer information sessions on both move-in days, so if you are unable to stay through Sunday, you will still be able to attend these informational programs.

How does the move-in process work?

Move-in takes place over a two-day period - Friday, August 29, and Saturday, August 30. You will drive up to your son/daughter's building and your car will be unloaded by Hopkins student volunteers. You will be given directions on where to park, and you will then go to the Parent Reception! Hopkins move-in is designed to be as relaxing and welcoming for incoming families as possible. You will receive more details on the move-in process in our first mailing, to be sent out at the end of June.

Can we move our child in early?

Moving in before the assigned move-in days is generally discouraged. Special requests are addressed on a case-by-case basis through the AMR II Housing Office. Please contact that office at 410-516-8282 if you will need to change your move-in date.

What do we have to do, and when do we have to do it, if our student is on a Pre-O trip?

You should contact the Pre-Orientation office at preo@jhu.edu or 410-516-4417, or check their website at http://web.jhu.edu/recreation/experiential_ed/pre-orientation for more information.

How much free time will we have with our son/daughter during Orientation?

Orientation is a busy week, but there will be plenty of free time for you to help your child unpack, go shopping, and dine in local restaurants. An updated Orientation schedule will be available online later this summer.

When can we come back and visit?

Family Weekend is a great opportunity for you to come back to visit Hopkins. More details will be available in the coming months at http://www.jhu.edu/parents/events_famweek.html.
